The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Standards
SC.F.1.1.3.1.1 knows ways organisms change as they grow and mature (for example, as people grow up their size changes).
SC.F.1.1.3.1.2 knows that living things grow and change in different ways and in different lengths of time (for example, butterfly, frog, daisy, pine tree).
Objectives: Students will...
  • understand that living things go through a life cycle.
  • be able to explain the life cycle of a butterfly.
  • create a butterfly's life cycle using technology.

Goals
Students will not only learn the stages that a butterfly goes through, but that they will also be able to create and construct a butterfly's cycle using materials in the classroom as well as technology.

Abstract
Anticipatory Set:
Now that we have talked about life cycles and gone through an insect’s life cycle, you are now going to create a butterfly’s life cycle. It won’t be how we normally create things, but rather something different. You are going to show me how a butterfly goes through its life cycle using a program on the computer. Everybody will get a chance to get on and create.

Teaching Procedures: 30 minutes per lesson

  1. Review the life cycle of a frog and then of a butterfly.
  2. Go over the terms for the life cycle of a butterfly: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis/cocoon), butterfly.
  3. Put students in groups of three and have them define each stage.
  4. Students will complete a short review of stages.
  5. Show students an example of a completed PowerPoint of the life cycle.
  6. Give students the opportunity to ask questions.
  7. Review how students should go to the file once they log in to the computer to obtain the pictures of the stages.
  8. Because there is a limit on how many students can get on the computer as a time, give students an alternative assignment while they wait their turn.
  9. Steps 7 and 8 will be repeated each class period until each student has completed their project.
Alternative Assignment: Student will create a booklet with the stages. Each stage will need a detailed explanation of the stages. Students can decorate their booklet after they have fulfilled the requirements.

Closure

After each student has completed their life cycle, they will have the opportunity to present their PowerPoint and explain their project. Though they should all have the butterfly’s life cycle, each project will be different.
After presentations, students will complete an Exit Slip to wrap up the lesson and as a form of assessment.

Technology**
The technology that would be used is the computer/internet. Students will log on like regular and follow the instructions to go to the quiz. As students complete the quiz, I will check and record their score.
